Mailing list change proposal

Noel O'Boyle
Administrator
May I suggest that we change openbabel-dev to only allow posting by
members? That is, that posts by non-members are rejected (with a
message) without review. This would reduce the admin burden on spam
filtering. There is a list of existing non-members with posting rights
on the mailman interface, and they could be contacted off-list to let
them know of any changes.

I won't go so far as to suggest the same for openbabel-discuss, but
it's worth considering whether it would be a net benefit to the
project to have this, with the idea that it builds community. (I heard
this argument a few years back from the lead dev for Gromacs.)

I don't think this is a good idea. I don't want to find out if the spammers have figured out how to sign up for mailing lists. If you send a message on rejection, you will guarantee an increase in spam posts, because the e-mail of the mailing list will now be "proven."

If you don't want to handle spam filtering, that's fine, I can take you off the moderator list. As is, I handle it a few times a week and filter the requests into a separate folder.

Stefano Forli
Our experience with the AutoDock mailing list with members-only posting is pretty
positive. When a user registers to the mailing list, his/her first post needs to be
approved once, then future posts get straight to the mailing list.
Spam messages can be either ignored or rejected.

I don't know how much work would be to filter messages without this mechanism, but it is
fairly easy to manage (I'm basically the only one taking care of it).
On the other hand, I don't know openbabel-dev works, but if every single message needs to
be approved, it sounds like more work to me.
My 2 cents.

No. Members can submit just fine. Any other messages are held for moderation. I believe SourceForge has some level of spam filtering too.

As I mentioned to Noel, I look at the moderation queue about one a week. Most of the time it can be quickly dumped.
